Paint.NET Image Editor Lets You Ditch PhotoShop
Adobe’s powerful image editing software, Photoshop, has become the industry standard. It’s wide ranging suite of features and plugin library makes it a very popular tool used in every profession where image manipulation is required. The downside is the cost is in the hundreds of dollars and most of those fancy features will never be needed by most users. Enter Paint (dot) NET. Paint (dot) NET is perhaps the best no-cost software that allows you to perform all the common functions you’d normally need to accomplish using Photoshop.
The interface for Paint (dot) NET is easy to use, making the learning curve for this software practically non-existent. If you’ve spent any time whatsoever in Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, the Paint (dot) NET menu structure and feature set will feel very familiar.
Paint (dot) NET even has a pretty good set of plugins which are available via the software maker’s forum website. It includes all the features you need to do everything from touching up your photos to creating all new illustrations. All major file formats are supported; jpg, bmp, gif, png, tif and tga.
And though Photoshop PSD files are not supported naively in Paint (dot) NET, a plugin is availalbe (from here) that allows you to open your Photoshop files. Obviously the Paint (dot) NET community have rallied around the original creators in producing one of our favorite bitmap editing applications. We consider this a must have for any frugal PC user.
Paint (dot) NET is available only for Windows and from what we can tell there are no plans to port this to the Linux or Mac OSs.download
