OpenOffice.org Good Enough To Replace MS Office
OpenOffice.org is both a product and a project. The project is an open source community effort headed up by Sun Microsystems to create the award winning product, an office software suite that is professional in quality and a worthy rival to Microsoft Office.
OpenOffice.org includes a word processor, speadsheet, drawing program, database management and presentation software. It’s big sister retail product, Star Office, is an enterprise suite that also includes tools for web publishing and an office server. And while Star Office is very affordable, only OpenOffice.org is free.
It is multilinqual; localized in dozens of languages. It’s multiplatform; for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and several others. It’s easy to use, matching feature for feature when compared with other office suites. It’s also compatible with files created by other office producs, including MS Office 2003 and earlier as well as WordPerfect Office and Lotus Symphony. A plugin is rumored to be available that allows the current release of OpenOffice.org to even open documents created by Office 2007
